About the Authors

Robert G. Hoeft
Professor of Soil Fertility Extension in the Department of Crop Sciences at the University of Illinois
Robert G. Hoeft received his undergraduate and Master's degrees from the University of Nebraska, and his Ph.D. degree in soils from the University of Wisconsin. He served as an Extension Agronomist at South Dakota State University before moving to the University of Illinois in1973. His research and extension programs provide information which allows producers to optimize the benefits from fertilizer while minimizing the potential for adverse effects on the environment. He has authored many articles in popular and scientific publications and received numerous awards from professional organizations. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy and of the Soil Science Society of America.

Emerson D. Nafziger
Professor of Crop Production Extension in the Department of Crop Sciences at the University of Illinois
Emerson D. Nafziger grew up on a farm in northwestern Ohio, and received his B.S. in agronomy at The Ohio State University, and his M.S. in agronomy at Purdue University. He served for four years as an agronomist with the Mennonite Central Committee in Bangladesh, then earned his Ph.D. in agronomy (weed science) at the University of Illinois. He has been in his present position since 1982. He conducts applied research and extension in crop production, with the goal of improving economic returns to crop production. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy and of the Crop Science Society of America.

Richard R. Johnson
(1947-1999)
Richard R. Johnson served 19 years as Senior Principal Scientist for Deere and Company prior to his untimely death in 1999. A native of Iowa, he received his undergraduate and Master's degrees from Iowa State University and his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. Prior to joining Deere and Company, he was on the Agronomy faculty at the University of Illinois. At Deere and Company, he was responsible for integrating the evolving technology of crop production into farm equipment needs. He worked to insure that new equipment met grower needs, and that the equipment assisted farmers in minimizing nonpoint-source pollution. He was a prolific author, with many technical papers within Deere as well as numerous publications in popular and scientific journals. He was elected as a Fellow in the American Society of Agronomy and of the Crop Science Society of America, and received numerous other awards from professional organizations.

Samuel R. Aldrich
Professor Emeritus of Soil Fertility Extension at the University of Illinois
Samuel R. Aldrich received his undergraduate degree from Michigan State University and his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University. Throughout his career he specialized in soil fertility and crop production, and was a recognized authority on environmental problems related to agriculture. He has authored numerous books related to crop production and the environment, and has published many articles in popular and scientific journals. His Modern Corn Production, coauthored with Dr. Earl R. Leng in 1965, was the seminal work that culminated in this book. He has received numerous awards from professional organizations.
